Synthesia API in 2026: Interactive Avatar Pricing, Credits and Limits
By Mukul Munjal, Founder, InterviewFlowAI Pricing verified 30 October 2026
As of 30 October 2026, Synthesia's API sells two different things. Interactive Avatars, the real-time part, cost 10 credits ($0.10) a minute for the avatar alone, drawn from a Synthesia plan's credits; a full stack at $0.20 is listed as coming soon. Rendered video uses 100–160 credits a minute. Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars streams a real-time avatar for $0.02 a minute, billed per second.

60-second comparison
The decision at a glance
Synthesia is mainly an AI video generator: you write a script and it renders a presenter video. Only one part of its API competes with us, the real-time Interactive Avatars, which cost 10 credits ($0.10) a minute from a Synthesia plan and join your LiveKit room. For videos rendered from a script, use Synthesia. For a live avatar, Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars costs $0.02 a minute with no plan and works with ready-made avatars, and Talking Avatar Voice Agents give you a complete agent for $0.06 a minute today, where Synthesia's full stack is still marked coming soon.
Choose Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars if…
- You want a real-time avatar for $0.02 a minute, billed per second, with no plan or credits to size.
- You want ready-made avatars on day one: Synthesia's stock actor avatars can't be used in real time.
- You want a complete agent now: Voice Agents include the LLM, speech and voice for $0.06 a minute.
- Your agent isn't on LiveKit: we also stream over WebRTC straight to your page, with a WebSocket API for any language.
- Volume is high or calls run long: sessions of up to 3 hours and enterprise contracts from $0.005 a minute.
- You want your own face live: a custom avatar costs $199 once and works in the API and in Voice Agents.
Choose Synthesia if…
- You need rendered presenter videos for training, onboarding or explainers, made from a script.
- You need dubbing or translation of existing videos through an API ($0.40–0.80 a minute).
- Your company already pays for a Synthesia plan and has credits to spare for live sessions.

What 1,000 real-time avatar minutes a month cost
Published prices as of 30 October 2026. Synthesia: the cheapest self-serve plan whose credits cover 1,000 Interactive Avatar minutes at 10 credits each (Pro 2×, 12,500 credits), avatar only. Synthesia doesn't publish its top-up credit prices. Voice Agents include the LLM, speech recognition and voice; Realistic Avatars and Synthesia's avatar-only tier work with your own agent.

- Realistic Avatars$20
What does the Synthesia API include?
One API key covers three products. The Video API renders finished presenter videos from a script, document or template and hands you an .mp4; on self-serve plans it comes with Pro (up to 360 minutes of video a year) and Enterprise, and Synthesia's help center prices it at 160 credits per minute of API usage, against about 100 for a minute made in the Studio editor. The Dubbing API translates existing videos for $0.40 a minute, or $0.80 with lip sync. Interactive Avatars are the real-time part: a hosted avatar that joins your LiveKit room and lip-syncs the speech your own agent produces. Only that third product competes with Talking Avatar, which is built for real time. If a recorded training or explainer video, or dubbing, is what you need, Synthesia is the tool and this page won't change that. The rest of this comparison is about live, two-way conversations with an avatar.
How much do Synthesia Interactive Avatars cost?
Interactive Avatar sessions use 10 credits per minute, which Synthesia's API rate card and developer docs list as $0.10 a minute, as of 30 October 2026. There is no separate API bill: "API usage draws from the same credit balance as your subscription." So the real price depends on the plan. Basic is free with 500 credits a month (about 50 minutes). Starter is $19 a month for 1,750 credits, Pro $89 for 6,500, and Pro 2× to 8× $176 to $676 for 12,500 to 48,500. Divide and a minute costs $0.109 on Starter, $0.137 on Pro and about $0.14 on the larger Pro levels, or $0.08–0.09 billed yearly. Credits reset each billing period and don't roll over; top-up prices aren't published, and neither is how partial minutes are counted. Synthesia's own pages also disagree in places: its Interactive Avatars page shows $0.12 a minute pay-as-you-go and a launch offer of 500 free minutes. We use the rate card's $0.10.
What 1,000 or 10,000 minutes a month cost
At 1,000 minutes a month you need 10,000 credits. The cheapest self-serve plan that covers that is Pro 2× at $176 a month (12,500 credits, so 1,250 minutes), or $117 a month billed yearly. The same minutes cost $20 on Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars and $60 on Talking Avatar Voice Agents, which include the LLM, speech recognition and voice. At 10,000 minutes you need 100,000 credits a month. The largest self-serve level, Pro 8× at $676, holds 48,500 (4,850 minutes), so this volume means an Enterprise quote or top-ups; at the $0.10 rate card it would be $1,000. Realistic Avatars costs $200, and our enterprise and high-volume contracts go as low as $0.005 a minute. When Synthesia's full stack ships at 20 credits a minute, 1,000 minutes would need 20,000 credits, which is Pro 4× at $347 a month.
How the Interactive Avatar API works, and what it leaves out
You attach Synthesia's AvatarSession to a LiveKit voice agent. A hosted worker joins your room as a participant, receives your agent's audio and publishes the lip-synced avatar. The plugin exists for Python (on PyPI since 15 September 2026) and Node.js (on npm since 9 October); without it you call the REST API and manage LiveKit tokens yourself. Synthesia's docs list what isn't there yet: LiveKit is the only transport, there's no embed or iframe snippet, no session list, transcripts, recordings or webhooks, framing is bust only, and mobile isn't a primary target. Concurrency is 1 session on the free plan and 100 on paid plans, with a separate minute cap whose threshold isn't published. Synthesia publishes no latency figure, and its plugin reference says the avatar has typically taken about 45 seconds to join a room, against a 30-second default timeout. One thing it does well: a session can load up to five avatars and swap between them without reconnecting.
Which avatars work in real time?
Synthesia's library is large for rendered video (125+ avatars on Starter, 240+ on Enterprise), but its docs say stock actor-based avatars, such as Ryan or Ada, can't be used as Interactive Avatars. Only personal avatars (a digital twin of a real person: 3 on Starter, 5 on Pro, unlimited on Enterprise) and synthetic ones, including the Style Avatars you build in Avatar Builder, can be converted for real-time use through the API. On the free Basic plan, which has no personal avatars, that narrows the choice. Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars starts from a growing library of ready-made photorealistic avatars, casual and professional, that work in real time from the first API call. If you want a specific person, a custom avatar costs $199 once, with the presenter's consent, and then bills at the same $0.02 a minute.
Avatar only or a complete agent: the choice on each side
Both companies split real-time avatars into two offers. Synthesia's avatar-only tier ($0.10 a minute) expects your own LLM, speech recognition and voice, and its full stack, with Synthesia's voice and LLM, is listed at $0.20 a minute and marked coming soon on 30 October 2026, although its July launch post promised it for 1 October. Talking Avatar sells both today. Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars is the avatar for the agent you already run (OpenAI Realtime, LiveKit Agents, Pipecat or any TTS) at $0.02 a minute, streamed to your page over WebRTC or into your LiveKit room. Talking Avatar Voice Agents are the complete agent at $0.06 a minute: you write a prompt, pick an avatar and a voice, add up to 20 tools that call your URLs, and share it as a link or embed it with one line. Every call gets a transcript and an optional post-call webhook.

When to choose Synthesia
Where Synthesia is the better fit
Synthesia is the better choice for rendered video. Its Studio and Video API turn a script, document or template into a finished presenter video you download as an .mp4, and its Dubbing API translates existing videos into 130+ languages with lip sync for $0.40–0.80 a minute. If you already pay for a Synthesia plan, its credits also cover Interactive Avatar minutes without a second vendor.
Switching from Synthesia
On Synthesia's avatar-only tier your agent already makes the audio, so switching changes only the face. Keep your rendered videos in Synthesia if you use them; this replaces the live avatar.
- Create a Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars account (it comes with $1 of free credits) and an API key.
- Pick a ready-made avatar, or order a custom one for $199, one time, with the presenter's consent.
- Remove Synthesia's AvatarSession from your agent and send the same audio to our avatar, in your LiveKit room or over WebRTC to your page.
- Keep your LLM, speech recognition and voice as they are; the avatar speaks the audio your agent already produces.
- Run both on a slice of traffic and compare start-up time and cost per conversation before moving everyone.
Methodology
How we evaluated this comparison
Pricing and features come from each vendor's own website, documentation or source code, checked in October 2026 and dated on this page. Where a vendor doesn't publish something, we say so rather than guess. We haven't run paid trials of every product. We built Talking Avatar, so we name what each competitor does better and who should choose it instead.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Synthesia API cost?
It depends on the product. As of 30 October 2026, Interactive Avatars use 10 credits ($0.10) a minute, dubbing $0.40 a minute or $0.80 with lip sync, and API video 160 credits per minute. All of it comes out of a Synthesia plan's credits: Basic is free with 500 a month, Starter $19 for 1,750 and Pro $89 for 6,500, up to $676 for 48,500.
Can I try Synthesia Interactive Avatars for free?
Yes. The free Basic plan gets 500 credits a month, about 50 Interactive Avatar minutes, with one session at a time, and Synthesia's help center says every plan gets a one-time 60 minutes at sign-up. Basic has no personal avatars, and stock actor avatars can't be used in real time. Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars gives new accounts $1 of credits, 50 minutes, with ready-made avatars.
When did Synthesia launch Interactive Avatars?
Synthesia announced the Interactive Avatar API for Enterprise customers in a blog post dated 15 July 2026. Its Python LiveKit plugin reached PyPI on 15 September, TechCrunch covered avatars that listen and talk back on 26 September, and the Node.js plugin followed on 9 October. Synthesia now calls it generally available to anyone with an API key. The full stack promised for 1 October was still marked coming soon on 30 October.
Does Synthesia's Interactive Avatar API work without LiveKit?
No. Synthesia's docs say LiveKit is the only transport: the avatar joins a LiveKit room as a participant, through the Python or Node.js plugin or through the REST API with tokens you mint. Pipecat support is listed as coming soon. Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars works in a LiveKit room too, and can also stream over WebRTC directly to your page.
Can I use Synthesia's stock avatars in real time?
Not the stock actor-based ones. Synthesia's docs say only synthetic and personal avatars can be converted into Interactive Avatars; stock actors such as Ryan or Ada return an error. Personal avatars come with paid plans (3 on Starter, 5 on Pro). Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars lets you use any avatar in its ready-made library from the first call, or a custom avatar of a real person for $199 once, with their consent.
Synthesia vs Talking Avatar: which costs less for a real-time avatar?
Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars costs less at every volume we checked: $20 for 1,000 minutes against $176 a month on Synthesia Pro 2×, and $200 for 10,000 against an Enterprise quote ($1,000 at Synthesia's $0.10 rate card). With the LLM, speech and voice included, Voice Agents cost $60 and $600.
Does Talking Avatar make videos like Synthesia?
Talking Avatar is built for real time: avatars that speak in live conversations on your site or in your app. For downloadable presenter videos rendered from a script, or dubbing existing videos, Synthesia's Studio, Video API and Dubbing API are the right tools.
