The Cheapest AI Avatar APIs in 2026: HeyGen API Pricing vs 18 Real-Time Alternatives

By Mukul Munjal, Founder, InterviewFlowAI8 min read

The cheapest real-time AI avatar APIs per minute are Spatius ($0.0056), Simli and Protoface (about $0.01), and Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars and bitHuman ($0.02). Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars is the cheapest when usage is small or spiky, because it has no subscription. HeyGen's video API is now pay-as-you-go, and its live avatars cost $0.079–0.19 a minute through LiveAvatar. Managed agents (Anam, Tavus, D-ID, Azure) cost $0.11–0.50 a minute because they include speech, an LLM and a voice.

Key takeaways

  • Face-only APIs, where you bring your own voice agent, have a median price of $0.05 a minute; managed agents have a median of $0.188.
  • The lowest per-minute rates (Spatius, Simli, Protoface) come with monthly subscriptions and concurrency caps. They're cheapest when you use what the plan includes.
  • At 300 minutes a month, Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars is the cheapest option we found, at $6. At 10,000 minutes, Spatius and Protoface are cheaper, and Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars is third at $200.
  • Billing rules change the real price: Tavus charges a 30-second minimum per call, Avatario and Akool bill in 10-second steps, and LemonSlice and bitHuman bill idle time.
  • Hedra shut down its real-time avatar on 15 April 2026, and Soul Machines has been in receivership since February 2026.

What HeyGen's API costs in 2026

HeyGen moved its API for generated videos to pay-as-you-go: no plan and no subscription. You buy credits in dollars, priced by avatar engine and video length, and they expire after 12 months; the API processes 10 videos at a time. Those prices are for rendered videos, not live conversations. HeyGen prices real-time avatars separately through LiveAvatar: 1 credit a minute in LITE mode (your own voice stack) and 2 in FULL, on plans of $99 and $475 a month, which works out to about $0.079–0.095 and $0.158–0.19 a minute.

With little or uneven usage, monthly plans mostly buy minutes you don't use. Pay as you go wins here: 300 minutes on Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars cost $6, against $10 for Simli's smallest plan, $19 for Spatius's Starter subscription and $99 for LiveAvatar's.

Scale: 10,000 minutes a month

Monthly cost for 10,000 minutes

Cheapest self-serve option for that volume, from published plans and overage. Managed agents include their voice stack.

  • Spatius$119
  • Protoface$125

  • HeyGen LiveAvatar (LITE)$835
  • Anam (managed)$1,219
  • LemonSlice$1,680
  • Tavus (managed)$2,535

At steady volume, plans with large minute bundles pull ahead: Spatius (on an annual subscription) and Protoface come in under Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars's $200. Those plans cap concurrent sessions (22 on Spatius Growth, 10 on Protoface Launch), while Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars has no subscription and no concurrency tiers, with sessions of up to 3 hours each. Managed agents cost more because they run the whole conversation; add your own speech, LLM and voice costs before comparing them with a face-only API.

How to choose on price

  • You already run a voice agent: compare face-only APIs only. Managed agents charge for a voice stack you already pay for.
  • Usage is small or unpredictable: pay as you go (Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars, Avatario) avoids a subscription and unused plan minutes.
  • Usage is steady and high: a plan with a large minute bundle (Spatius, Simli, Protoface) is cheapest per minute; check its concurrency cap.
  • Many people talk at once: check concurrency before price. HeyGen LiveAvatar's paid plans don't cap it, and Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars has no concurrency tiers.
  • Budget is zero: Talking Avatar Open Source is free for any use (MIT) and lip syncs your own 3D avatar in the browser.

Open Source and Realistic Avatars

Two ways to use Talking Avatar

Use Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars for a ready-made photorealistic face, or the free, MIT-licensed open-source SDK to lip sync your own 3D avatars in the browser. Both are driven by your own voice agent: OpenAI Realtime, LiveKit, Pipecat or any TTS.

Talking Avatar Open Source

Free

The SDK and its 1 MB lip-sync model run entirely in the user's browser and animate any 3D .glb avatar from your agent's audio. No server, no API key, and the audio never leaves the page.

Methodology

Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page, docs or billing API, checked on 7 October 2026. The "lowest self-serve price" is the cheapest per-minute rate available without an Enterprise contract, either a plan's effective rate (plan price ÷ included minutes) or its overage rate. Monthly costs use the cheapest self-serve option for that volume. Beyond Presence prices in euros and UneeQ doesn't publish prices, so neither is charted. We build Talking Avatar, and we've listed where others are cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest real-time AI avatar API?

Per minute at steady volume, Spatius publishes the lowest self-serve rate ($0.0056 over plan, on a subscription from $19 a month), followed by Simli and Protoface at about $0.01, also on monthly plans. For small or irregular usage with no subscription, Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars at $0.02 a minute is the cheapest of the options we compared.

How much does the HeyGen API cost?

HeyGen's API for generated videos is pay-as-you-go with no plan or subscription: you buy credits in dollars, priced by avatar engine and video length, and they expire after 12 months. Live interactive avatars are priced separately through LiveAvatar, at about $0.079–0.095 a minute in LITE mode and $0.158–0.19 in FULL.

Why do Tavus, D-ID and Anam cost more per minute?

They're managed agents: the price includes speech recognition, an LLM and a voice, plus features like perception or knowledge bases. If you already run a voice agent, compare face-only APIs instead.

Is there a free AI avatar API?

Several have free tiers: Simli (50 minutes a month), Anam (30), Tavus (20) and HeyGen LiveAvatar (10 credits). Talking Avatar Open Source is free for any use (MIT) and lip syncs your own 3D avatar in the browser.

Should I pick a monthly plan or pay as you go?

Most avatar APIs require a subscription: Spatius, for example, starts at $19 a month for 2,000 minutes. If your usage is steady and fills a plan, subscriptions like Simli's or Spatius's are cheapest per minute. If usage is small, seasonal or spiky, Talking Avatar Realistic Avatars needs no subscription: you buy only the minutes you use, with no concurrency tiers.
